I've ridden bikes of all shapes and sizes over the last 30 years and the Savage is still one of my favorites. My wife got her Canary Yellow '96 last summer and she loves it. She's a novice rider and it's low seat height and light weight make it a perfect bike for her.
I would recommend the Savage as a first bike for anyone. I put 30,000 miles on an '87 Savage in three years and it kept up with the Harley's I rode with just fine. It actually had a slightly longer cruising range than a Sportster 883 I rode with a lot.
Whatever bike you buy, take your time and enjoy the ride. Welcome home.
